What is problem solving?
The two words – problems solving – has two roots:
Problem: It is the question raised for consideration or solution.
Solution: It means to deal with a problem to reach to the conclusion.
Problem solving is the process of working through the details of a problem to reach the solution. It may include mathematical or systematic operation and can be a gauge of critical thinking skills.
Define the problem:
In order to get clear on what the problem is, defining the problem also helps you to establish the goal you want to achieve. Einstein is quoted having said that if he had an hour to save the world then he would spend fifty minutes defining the problem and only five minutes finding the solution and implementing it. The quote illustrates that before skipping to the conclusion right away, we should step back and invest some time and effort to improve of understanding of it.
Brainstorm the idea:
Brainstorming combines a relaxed, informal approach to problem solving with lateral thinking. It encourages students to come up with thoughts and ideas that might seems impossible, at first, but the results turns out to be accurate in the end.
Make a map in your head:
Mapping a problem in your head I a very simple and powerful technique that is used by almost everyone who have to deal with problems in their academic life or professional. Mind mapping is a proven method that helps students surpass the initial chaos that occurs in the mind when asked to solve a problem. Mapping includes visualizing the goal and ideas in your mind.
Break into parts:
Breaking problem into part is an analytical solution to solving a problem. In this process, problem is broken down into smaller pieces that makes it easier to solve it.
Decide on a method:
There are number of methods for finding a solution to every problem. Think about the different techniques and stick to the one that you think is easy for you.
Use the 80/20 Rule:
It means that students should use 80% of their time to find a solution and rest 20% to worry about the problem. If you focus more on finding a problem and less on worrying about it, there are greater chances of accomplishment.
Simplify the problem:
Human beings have the tendency to make things more complicated than they actually are. Try looking for easy and obvious solution because it is always simple things that are most productive.
Take a risk:
In order to reach to a successful conclusion, taking a risk is necessary. The key to taking risk is ‘research’ that will help you to know all the possible outcomes.
